The city of San Ramon, in the Alajuela province, is a bustling regional center with surrounding agricultural and mountain areas that offer peace and quiet. Five of Costa Rica's Presidents and three famous poets hail from San Ramon - The City of Poets. Revolution is also in the blood of San Ramon. This is where Pepe Figueres plotted the overthrow of tyranny in the 1940's and formed the army-free Second Republic of Costa Rica, now a beacon to the world. As a regional center, you'll enjoy the excellent infrastructure this status brings. San Ramon is a rural area with a strong local economy and large working class and middle class population. Violent crime is almost non-existent, you will find mingling with your Tico neighbors to be a rewarding cultural exchange that happens naturally in the course of daily life.
Notable for its pleasant climate and scenic views, the altitude ranges from 1,000 to 1,200 meters with usual daytime temperatures 20-26 C and nighttime 16 to 20 C year around. The temperate climate means that you won't need air conditioning or central heating. And you can enjoy a romantic evening by the cozy fire on the cooler November and December nights. If you like great views, San Ramon has lots of farms, lots and homes with spectacular city lights, mountain and even distant ocean views.
During December through April there is only occasional rain, with mist or drizzle at higher altitudes keeping the area green. Summertime is sunny and dry in San Ramon, you will enjoy outdoor activities like swimming or cookouts, but the area never gets dusty and brown like some other areas with more sunshine and less rain.

You can access San Ramon conveniently on the Inter-American highway midway between San Jose and the Pacific port of Puntarenas. Most of San Ramon is less than 45 minutes away from the Juan Santamaria International airport. Living in San Ramon lets you enjoy many of Costa Rica's top tourist attractions, you and your visitors will never lack for fun things to see and do.
Since San Ramon is a regional center, you can enjoy the excellent
infrastructure this status brings. While people in more remote areas have to go to San Jose or other provincial capitols for many daily necessities or to take care of paperwork, San Ramon residents will find most everything right here in town. You will also have a wide selection of dance halls offering dance entertainment of all sorts and afternoon hours as well.
The University of Costa Rica has a regional branch as well as the
MOPT for licenses and car registration, Social Security office and
there are private bi-lingual schools and a major hospital. There is a new mall on the highway and has what malls everywhere offer including a movie theater.
Tico friendliness prevails, no urban blight or serious crime. Birds and animal life abound in the entire area and there are many scenic rivers and waterfalls. Main crops are coffee, ornamental plants, vegetables, and sugar cane. Many of the popular upscale areas in Costa Rica are located close to poverty stricken urban areas, which means that the expat population is overly concerned with crime and security. San Ramon is a rural area with a strong local economy and large working class and middle class population. You will be able to enjoy the area's natural beauty and wildlife at every turn.
You may easily find your way to popular San Carlos, Volano Arenal and La Fortuna, where you can take on the thrilling adventure of the zip line canopy. Or relax, restore and rejuvenate yourself in the 7 hot spring pools offered at Termales Del Bosque. Los Lagos resort is a good way to spend your time. They have a great value package which includes use of the ground, hot spring pools with slides, butterfly and ant farm, crocodiles and talapia farm all while enjoying the majestic setting of Volcan Arenal at back.
If you are looking for a building site, land to develop or a small farm, San Ramon features properties with views, waterfalls, rivers, or many different types of crops. Very small lots for commercial property are available in the center of town, whereas most building lots tend to be 1/2 acre or more.
